Letter to the School Educator
Dear School Educator
Cannamore Orchard is pleased to present our children's programs to your school as an addition to your field trip curriculum. We offer strawberry, apple and pumpkin tours to school groups up to grade 6 during the spring and fall months.
For all group reservations, we offer a picnic area, use of the mazes: the dark maze (bring your own flashlights!), left and right turn only maze, pipe maze, and the coloured patio stone mazes. We also have freestanding finger mazes, play structures, and life-size checkers. You can visit the animal corral, inspect the bee yard and enjoy either an outdoor or covered area picnic while on your tour. You pick the tour for your group: our strawberry fields, the apple orchard or the pumpkin field on a guided wagon ride! If you would like to visit the activity/museum display, please let us know when booking your tour so arrangements can be made. This area contains displays related to apples, honey, maple sugar, strawberries, pumpkins and Halloween as well as eggs and cherries. There are also activities that children can do related to how things were done in the past. Please note that it may not always be possible to get a French or bilingual guide for the activity/museum area. Not only will the children leave after having a hands-on experience, they will receive worksheets and/or colouring sheets, and they will also take home from the fall tours a bag of apples or a small pumpkin of their very own!
All tours are available for $5.00 (plus HST) per student. One supervisor or teacher per 8 students is admitted free of charge. Additional supervisors/parents are $3.00 (plus HST) per person. Tours are available in either French or English. Strawberry tours usually begin at the end of May. Apple tours begin in late August and usually last until the first days of October. Pumpkin tours can begin in late September and go till the end of October. Please note there is a minimum charge of $65.00 plus HST for any tour.
For timing purposes a complete visit, including guided tour, visiting animals, using outdoor mazes and having a picnic, usually takes approximately 2 hours. After your tour, you are free to use the facilities for your own activities. Tours are usually given in the morning or in the afternoon.
Please note that all activities related to the Spooky Wagon RideTM are not included in any of the tours.
Sincerely,
Dennis & Claire Taylor
P.S. You are advised to book early as the tour schedule fills quickly.
Letter to the Program Director or Tour Operator
Welcome to Cannamore Orchard and our programs for your group or organization. Cannamore Orchard offers a variety of tours your group may be interested in taking. We have spring or strawberry tours, as well as tours during the summer months. During September and October you can book either an apple or pumpkin tour.
Tours involve a wagon ride to the strawberry fields, apple orchard or pumpkin fields. All wagons can accommodate wheel chairs and we have ramps from the ground to the wagon if needed. All tours also include a stop at the bee yard. Tours are lead by a bilingual tour guide and include information for the type of tour you request as well as information on honey bees and their importance for pollination. You should allow 2 hours for your tour and book either for morning or afternoon.
You can pick your own strawberries or buy pre-picked berries during the strawberry tour and during apple season, harvesting apples from our dwarf trees allows picking without the use of ladders. You can even pick apples while sitting in a wheel chair. For those who are more active, visit the web site for more activities.
We can arrange coffee and pie either in our indoor eating area or at the picnic tables outside around the pond. If your group wishes, they can enjoy the outdoors while playing cards or participating in any group activities you decide to bring with you. Don't forget to visit the animal corral.
Our country store offers a variety of products. We have pies, fudge, maple syrup, honey, jams and jellies as well as giftware and Halloween and fall decorations.
All tours are $5.00, plus HST, per person with 1 supervisor free per 8 visitors. Additional supervisors are charged only $3.00, plus HST. There is a minimum charge of $65.00 plus HST for each tour.
If you wish to book a tour, all information, as well as a booking sheet, can be found at the Cannamore Orchard web site: www.cannamoreorchard.com Those wishing to book a tour, especially for apples or pumpkins, are advised to book early. Our tours are very popular and many fall dates are fully booked by the first week in September. If you need additional information not found on the web page call the orchard at (613) 448-3633.
We look forward to booking your tour soon.
Please note that all activities related to the Spooky Wagon RideTM are not included in any of the tours.

General Information for all Tours
Payment Complete payment can be made in advance or upon arrival. You may pay before your trip with cash, cheque, visa, MasterCard or debit, Receipts are issued for all tours. Please note there is a minimum charge of $65.00 plus HST for any tour. We do not bill after the tour
Supervisors All groups must have a minimum of one supervisor for every eight students. Additional supervisors are charged $3.00 (plus HST) per person. We cannot allow any tour unless there is the minimum number of supervisors. Children are requested to have a name tag indicating their name and group since there might be more than 1 group that day. Please have all students bring a hat, sunscreen and amble water to drink, as a large portion of the day is spent outdoors. (Bottled water is also sold in the store.)
Supervisors are expected to control their students. A field trip to this working farm is an extension of the classroom. Typical school and class rules are expected. Inappropriate climbing, yelling, running, pushing and handling of orchard materials are not tolerated.
Arrival On many days there are several groups scheduled to visit the orchard. Please arrive about one half hour before your scheduled wagon ride time so that you can make payment, unload, use the washrooms and get organized. This allows everyone in all groups to enjoy their time with us without feeling rushed.
Food Services. It is important that tour visitors bring their own snacks and lunch. Inside and outside picnic tables are available in addition to a large grass resting area. There are a variety of snack food items available in the canteen such as potato chips, chocolate bars, soft drinks, fruit juices and water.
On Site We take great pride in keeping Cannamore Orchard clean and tidy. There are garbage cans throughout the grounds and we firmly request that waste be disposed of properly and that a supervisor be assigned to monitor this request. If you feel your group is not able to put their garbage in the garbage cans or your supervisors cannot properly chaperon the students then please do not book a trip to our orchard.
Unless parents wish for their children to make purchases at the orchard store, there is really no need to bring money other than possibly a few quarters to buy the special animal food to feed the animals in the animal corral. The animals must not be fed lunches or snacks - it could make them sick. We ask you not to feed any apples or other fruit to the animals.
Medications Students on medication or having allergies that need medical supplies should remember to bring their supplies with them. Remember that you are in a rural setting that has a bee yard on site. All tours include a visit to the bee yard. In case of emergency, Winchester District Memorial Hospital is 20 minutes from the orchard.
Strawberry Tours
(All guided tours must be pre-booked.)
Cannamore Orchard is open for spring or strawberry tours. You can book your group or class for a couple of hours to enjoy the farm atmosphere, have a picnic, and use the facilities. Your tour can include an explanation of what goes on during the spring months at the orchard and depending on the time of your tour, pick some strawberries.
You will stop near the bee yard where your tour guide will give a short talk about the importance of having bees for pollination purposes. Inside the museum you can see inside an actual beehive and learn how the honey is removed from the hive to a container.

- Use of facilities including picnic area around scenic pond and waterfall.

Fall Apple Tours
(All guided tours must be pre-booked.)
No visit to Cannamore Orchard would be complete without a wagon ride through the apple trees and bee yard! The tour includes an explanation about growing trees, tree guards, pruning and apple picking. Various items used in the production of apples will be shown and demonstrated. You will stop near the bee yard where your tour guide will give a short talk about the importance of having bees for pollination purposes.
Depending on the availability of the apples, each student may pick two apples, one to eat and one to put into their pocket. For those coming too late in the year to pick apples, this part will not be available. Each student when leaving the orchard after an apple tour will receive a small bag of fresh apples to take home with them. Each group of students will receive a jug of cider.
Arriving back at the play area your group can, under your supervision: play in the mazes (bring a flashlight for the dark maze), use the life-size checkers and the play structures, visit the animal corral, colour an apple picture or work on other themed printed materials. If you wish we can provide you with sheets and instructions for a scavenger hunt.
For lunch, we would suggest you eat outdoors using the picnic tables. We do have indoor sitting areas for those who would like a place to sit out of the weather for lunch or as a working place. When booking your tour please specify if you would like to use the indoor sitting area, as it can become quite popular. Groups who specify their need for its use will be given first choice and may use the area for up to 30 minutes.
Your tour can also include a visit to the Activity/Museum. Inside this newly expanded and renovated building you will find educational displays on apples, strawberries, honey and bees as well as maple syrup and Halloween. You will also see the interior of an actual working beehive as well as some of the equipment used to remove and harvest honey.
All tours including ride with tour guide, visit to bee yard, and use of facilities take approximately 2 hours. You may use the facilities after this if you wish to stay longer. You should book your tour for the morning or the afternoon.
Please note that all activities related to the Spooky Wagon RideTM are not included in any of the tours.

Fall Pumpkin Tours

No visit to Cannamore Orchard would be complete without a wagon ride through the pumpkin fields and bee yard! During the tour, the students will learn how pumpkins and gourds are grown and cared for at Cannamore Orchard and questions are always welcome!
Every child will return home with a small pumpkin. Please bring a bag in which to put your pumpkin. On your tour the wagon will stop where there are large pumpkins. Your tour guide will pick one for the group. This pumpkin will be of a suitable size for carving. Please note that students do not get off the wagon to pick a pumpkin.
You will stop near the bee yard where your tour guide will give a short talk about the importance of having bees for pollination purposes.
Arriving back at the play area, your group can, under your supervision: play in the mazes and the play structures, use the life-size checkers, visit the animal corral, colour a pumpkin picture or work on other themed printed materials. Some may wish to bring a flashlight if they plan on going through the dark maze. If needed, we can provide you with sheets and instructions for a scavenger hunt.
For lunch, we would suggest you eat outdoors using the picnic tables. We have indoor sitting areas for those who would like a place to sit out of the weather for lunch or as a working place. When booking your tour, please specify if you would like to use the indoor sitting area, as it can become quite popular.
