Special care should be taken when picking apples. Most pickers just want to grab the apple, pull it off the tree and drop it into their bag. This is definitely not the way to do it.
There is a better way to pick apples:
- When picking an apple it is important to hold onto the apple but with a gentle grip. Holding on too tightly will leave bruises, made by your fingers, all over the apple.
- Once you have the apple in a firm but gentle grip you should twist the apple in a circular direction and gently lift it.
- If there is more than one apple in a bunch, you must pick all the apples in that bunch. If you only pick one or two of them, the others will fall off the tree in a short time.
- Once you have picked your apple place it gently and carefully into your picking container.
- Common courtesy dictates that if you drop an apple you should pick it up and put it into your container. Almost all apples you see on the ground are due to careless pickers. All these apples will eventually have to be picked up. There is nothing we can do with these apples, other than feed them to animals, such as deer.
While picking apples it is okay to eat one. They are so good fresh off the tree. BUT you must not drop the apple core onto the ground, as this will eventually attract fruit flies, mice and other animals. All apple cores need to be placed in the garbage. You can bring them back to the store area where there are garbage pails.
